Overview

Patient access representatives, also known as patient service representatives, are often the first point of contact for patients visiting a hospital or clinic. In this role, you will help patients check in, schedule appointments, verify insurance, and ensure accurate information—all while providing clear, compassionate customer service.

This rewarding position is ideal for someone who enjoys helping others, staying organized, and working in a professional healthcare environment without undergoing years of schooling. It builds valuable skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and computer proficiency, opening the path to long-term growth in healthcare.

This course provides the knowledge needed to work successfully as a patient access representative—no previous healthcare experience required. The course’s electronic health record simulator offers a hands-on learning experience with the technology used to manage today’s patient healthcare information. You will learn the in-person and remote communication skills critical for success in this position. This course also teaches you how to collect patient information and answer billing questions.

This course provides comprehensive training that prepares you for two nationally recognized certification examinations through National Healthcareer Association (NHA): Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) and Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS). You will receive vouchers with this course that covers the fees for both exams. With these two credentials under your belt, you set yourself apart before prospective employers and give yourself more than one career-growth track to follow.

This comprehensive electronic health records and administrative medical assistant certification course bundle also includes a preparatory medical terminology course that introduces you to medical language and human anatomy, emphasizing the interconnectedness of body systems in health and disease, with exams at the midterm and final stages. If you have prior knowledge of medical terminology, you can optionally test out of this preparatory course by achieving a minimum score of 80% on the evaluation test, replacing this course content if desired.

Funding Disclaimer: For Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funded students, please consult with your funding source representative before taking advantage of this course's test-out feature. Different funding programs may have specific requirements and/or restrictions. If you attempt the test-out feature(s) in the Medical Terminology course without getting approval, your funding benefits may be jeopardized due to minimum hour requirements.
